Spatial distribution of sheep movement, behaviour and urination events
Fig. 1 Welsh Mountain ewe fitted with GPS collar
To understand sheep movement and behaviour, Welsh Mountain ewes have been fitted with collars (Fig.1) that contain accelerometers (motion detectors) and GPS. The GPS will tell us where the sheep are each second, and the accelerometers generate data at 40 times per second. From these data we can determine sheep behaviour and when and where they urinate in the field site. These data will be combined with measured environmental information and nitrous oxide fluxes to enable us to explore how sheep use their habitat, and to upscale the nitrous oxide emissions to the field scale.
